Treatment at ICPM: Breast Augmentation in Valencia

In short

  • No topical or oral product increases breast volume. There is no mechanism by which they could, and no evidence that they do.
  • 🔑 Chest exercises do not make the breast grow, for a simple anatomical reason: the muscle sits beneath the gland, and is not part of it. It can change the projection of the whole; it does not enlarge the breast.
  • The large-volume injectable filler for the breast did exist and has been withdrawn. It received European approval in 2008 and its distributors withdrew it from the worldwide breast augmentation market in April 2012.
  • ⚠️ The reason was specific and serious: the injections interfere with breast imaging and with breast cancer screening.
  • ⚠️ And the review that documented all that added something else uncomfortable: the great majority of published clinical series on that product offered an insufficient level of evidence and presented numerous conflicts of interest.
  • Its conclusion, in 2014: current scientific data do not justify the return to market of these products for breast augmentation.
  • External suction devices have been studied above all as a complement to fat grafting, not as a technique in their own right.
  • 🔑 The only two options with a real, measurable result are the implant and your own fat.

The short answer is that there is today no non-surgical way of enlarging the breast in a real and lasting way. The long answer is more interesting, because it explains why each option does not work — and because one of them did exist, was approved in Europe and was withdrawn from the worldwide market in 2012.

This page goes through what is on offer, what has been measured about each and where the limit lies.

Creams, pills and supplements

It is the best-selling category and the easiest to dispose of, and it deserves explaining by mechanism and not just by result.

The breast is gland, connective tissue and fat, and its volume is determined by genetics, hormonal status, weight and age. For a product to increase it, it would have to do one of two things: act on the hormonal stimulus of the glandular tissue or add physical volume.

  • A topical product does not cross the skin in a quantity or form useful for altering glandular development.
  • And a product that did act on the hormonal axis would not be a cosmetic: it would be a medicine, with its prescription, its contraindications and its effects on the rest of the body — including the breast itself.

⚠️ That second point is the one to bear in mind with “phytoestrogen” or “hormone-balancing” supplements. A product sold without medical supervision promising a hormonal effect is doing one of two things: not having that effect, or having it unsupervised. Neither is good.

Chest exercises

This one deserves a diagram because the confusion is purely anatomical.

The pectoralis major muscle lies beneath the mammary gland, not within it. The breast rests on it. Training that muscle makes it bigger — and what sits on top of it remains exactly the same volume of gland and fat.

What can happen:

  • A developed pectoral pushes the whole slightly forward, which can give a little more projection.
  • Better posture changes how the neckline looks.

What does not happen: the breast does not grow. And there is a detail that works against you: training that lowers your body fat percentage also reduces breast volume, because much of the breast is fatty tissue.

Vacuum and external expansion devices

External suction systems applied to the breast exist and do have a literature — but it is worth knowing in what context.

They have been studied above all as preparation for and a complement to fat grafting, on the idea of expanding the recipient tissue before grafting and improving the survival of the fat. Not as a standalone technique for lasting breast enlargement.

⚠️ Any effect of sustained suction on soft tissue is temporary by definition: the tissue returns to its shape when the stimulus stops. A home device promising permanent enlargement is promising something its own mechanism cannot sustain.

The injectable filler: the option that did exist

It is the most useful part of this page, because it is the only one that is not an internet promise: it was an approved medical device, CE-marked, indicated expressly for breast augmentation.

The timeline, documented:

  • 2007 — authorised in France.
  • 2008 — receives official European approval as a method of breast augmentation.
  • The following years accumulate controversy about its side effects.
  • ⚠️ April 2012 — its distributors withdraw it from the worldwide breast augmentation market.

The stated reason, in the review that documented the case: the injections interfere with breast imaging and with breast cancer screening. And the manufacturer itself imposed worldwide restrictions on its products intended for breast and penile augmentation.

🔑 And there is a second conclusion in that review that applies to far more than this one product:

The great majority of the clinical series available on this product, both in breast augmentation and in its other indications, offer an insufficient level of evidence and present numerous conflicts of interest.

In other words: there were favourable publications while the product was on the market, and the independent review concluded that they did not support what they appeared to support.

Its final verdict, in 2014: current scientific data do not justify the return to market of breast augmentation products of that kind.

What that means today

That if someone offers to inject a filler to enlarge your breasts, the conversation is not about whether it works: it is about why the only product that ever held approval for that indication was withdrawn.

⚠️ And the problem is not only the aesthetic result. A material injected into the breast sits between the radiologist and your breast tissue for the rest of your life, in an organ that has a population cancer screening programme.

What hyaluronic acid fillers are indicated for, and in which areas, is in the guide to hyaluronic acid treatments.

🚨 A separate and far more serious matter is the injection of non-medical substances into the breast — industrial liquid silicone, oils, “biopolymers” — which are not an alternative to augmentation but a health problem to be dealt with. It is covered in the guide to removing biopolymers.

What does change the appearance without changing the volume

For the sake of honesty, because for some people it is enough:

  • A properly fitted bra. Most women wear the wrong size, and the visual change of getting it right is real.
  • Padded or push-up garments, which change the shape and the projection.
  • Weight. The breast is largely fatty tissue: it goes up and down with it. It is not a strategy to recommend, and it is a fact worth knowing — particularly if surgery is being planned.
  • Posture, which changes how the neckline presents.

None of these things enlarges the breast. They change how it looks, which is a different and perfectly legitimate question.

The two options that do work

  • The breast implant, which provides a defined, predictable volume.
  • Grafting your own fat (lipofilling), which gives a more discreet increase with your own tissue.

Which suits each case is in the comparison between implants and your own fat, and the combination of the two in hybrid augmentation.

And there is a third legitimate answer this page does not want to leave out: not having surgery. A small breast is not a pathology or a problem that has to be solved. If what lies behind the search is discomfort with your own body rather than a specific wish, it is worth reading what is assessed before deciding on surgery.

If you have already had it injected

We see these patients here, and we remove the material and reconstruct the breast. It is not a closed door, and if you have injected filler in your breast it is a consultation you can ask for.

🚨 And it has to be said what that surgery is: an operation with risks MUCH higher than those of standard breast surgery. It is not like an explant or a lift. The material is not contained in a tidy capsule: it infiltrates the tissues, and removing it means resecting healthy tissue with it, with all that implies for the shape left afterwards.

Reconstruction is planned knowing that, and it is why this kind of case is assessed in more detail than any other. It is set out in removing biopolymers from the breast.

Frequently asked questions

Do creams or pills for breast enlargement work?

No. A topical product does not cross the skin in a useful quantity to alter the glandular tissue, and a product that did act on the hormonal axis would not be a cosmetic but a medicine, with a prescription and medical supervision.

Do chest exercises make the breast grow?

No. The pectoral muscle lies beneath the gland, not within it. Developing it can give the whole a little more projection, but it does not enlarge the breast — and training that lowers your body fat percentage can reduce its volume.

Can the breast be enlarged with hyaluronic acid?

The only filler with specific European approval for breast augmentation was withdrawn from the worldwide market in April 2012 by its distributors, because it interfered with breast imaging and with breast cancer screening. The review that documented the case concluded in 2014 that the scientific data did not justify its return.

And vacuum or suction devices?

They have been studied above all as a complement to fat grafting, not as a standalone enlargement technique. Any effect of sustained suction on soft tissue is temporary: the tissue recovers its shape when the stimulus stops.

Why is interfering with breast imaging so serious?

Because the breast has a population cancer screening programme, and any injected material sitting between the radiologist and the tissue makes it harder to read for the rest of the patient’s life.

Are an implant or fat really the only options?

Yes, if what you want is a real and lasting increase in volume. And there is a third perfectly valid answer, which is not to have surgery.

Book your consultation

If you have come here looking for an alternative to surgery, the most honest thing we can tell you is that today there is none for increasing volume in any real way. What does make sense is an assessment consultation where you are told how much can be achieved with each of the two options that work — and also what happens if you decide to do nothing.
