In short
- Everyday activity is usually resumed at around two weeks.
- 🚨 And an honest warning: recovery from a breast lift has barely been studied. There are no series measuring days off work, pain scales or return to sport for this operation in particular.
- The closest thing that exists comes from a different operation: in breast reduction, with objective activity data collected from the phones of 56 patients, the return to the previous level took 33.5 days on average.
- The post-surgical bra is worn continuously for the first few weeks.
- You sleep on your back and propped up, not on your side or face down.
- The first month is the window for the scar protocol, which is one of the few things with clear evidence: treating within the first month improves the scar significantly; after three months, it no longer does.
- At around six months the result is assessed. Not before: the tissue has not settled.
- 🔑 The shape and the scar move at different speeds, and confusing them is the number one cause of distress at two months.
A breast lift has a recovery that is more bearable than people fear and longer than people think. The first, because no tissue is removed and nothing is put in: what is there is repositioned. The second, because the breast takes months to settle and the scar takes longer still.
This page is the full timeline, with a warning worth reading before anything else.
⚠️ The timings on pages of this kind get copied from website to website and almost never come from anywhere. Here what is published is expressly separated from what is this practice’s own criterion, and it is stated when there is neither one nor the other.
Before we start: what is known and what is not
It is worth being transparent, because it changes how to read the rest.
What is published solidly about this operation are the complications and the moment to treat the scar. What is not published is practically everything a patient asks the day before: how many days off work, how much it hurts and for how long, when she can run.
Searching the literature on recovery after a breast lift turns up operating times and complication rates, but no patient recovery metrics. The best objective reference that exists in aesthetic breast surgery comes from breast reduction, not from a lift: a 2026 study used a phone app to record the real physical activity of 56 patients from a month before to six months afterwards, and the mean return to 90% of the previous level took 33.5 days.
⚠️ That is a reference, not your timeline. A reduction removes tissue and a lift does not, so a somewhat quicker recovery can be expected — but nobody has measured it, and saying so is more honest than copying a figure from another website.
Practical consequence: the timings that follow are a guide and this practice’s own, not the results of studies. The ones marked in red are waiting for the clinic to pin them down.
Week by week
⚠️ The timings on this page are the ICPM protocol for breast surgery without implants, and they are not a fixed calendar: the surgeon individualises them according to how each case progresses and to the circumstances. If an implant was also placed during your lift, the only practical difference is that the strict restriction on the arms is kept for the full two weeks, without easing off after the first.
The first few days
- Post-surgical bra continuously, day and night.
- Discomfort controllable with the prescribed painkillers. The dominant sensation is usually one of pressure and tightness, not of stabbing pain.
- Swelling and bruising, which subside gradually.
- You walk around the house from day one. It is desirable, not a feat.
- You sleep on your back and propped up. Not on your side, not face down.
- You do not raise your arms above your shoulders or carry any weight.
⚠️ What you will see in the mirror in these days is not the result. The breast is swollen, high and tight, and the scars are fresh. That is normal and it does not foretell anything.
The first week
It is the week of dependence: you will need help to get dressed, wash your hair and little else. The swelling begins to go down, and so does the discomfort.
The first check-up is at 2-3 days. Showering is allowed once the dressing is removed, if one is used — some surgeons put the bra straight on instead of a dressing, and then there is no dressing to remove.
The stitches come out at two weeks, and it is worth knowing exactly what that means: all the stitches are internal. What is taken out are the external ends of the intradermal sutures, not a stitch in the skin.
At around two weeks
The return to everyday activity usually happens at around two weeks. Exertion, lifting weight and wide arm movements are still avoided.
Work does differ by type, and quite a lot:
| Type of work | Return |
|---|---|
| Office or computer work | At 2-3 days, if there is no excessive discomfort |
| With light physical activity | At around 3 weeks |
| With heavy physical activity | 1 month |
Driving, from 2 weeks onwards.
🔑 That you can go back to the computer at 2-3 days is surprising, and it is true. What limits those first two weeks is not tiredness: it is not raising your arms above the horizontal or carrying more than 2 kg. A seated job does not clash with that; hanging out the washing or picking up a child does.
The first month
It is the window for the scar protocol, and it is one of the few things on this page resting on firm evidence: a meta-analysis of 14 trials and 492 scars found that treatment within the first month reduces the scar significantly, whereas after three months it shows no significant improvement. Exactly what is done, in how many sessions and at what price is in the scar protocol after surgery.
Sport is reintroduced gradually and with proper support.
Walking, from the day of the operation itself. The rest of the exercise is resumed gradually at one month — gradually means starting with the gentle and building up, not going back to your previous routine all at once.
The post-surgical bra is worn for a month, adapted to how things progress. ⚠️ Sometimes it has to be extended, and that does not mean anything is wrong: it means the tissue still appreciates the support.
Up to six months
This is the moment to assess the result: the tissue has settled and the swelling has gone. The scars go on maturing afterwards.
The clinic’s schedule of check-ups: at 2-3 days, 2 weeks, 1 month, 3 months, 6 months and 1 year.
And the sun: it is kept off the scar during the first year, and from the year onwards it is taken with factor 50 sun protection. It is a long period and it has its reason: the scar goes on maturing during that time, and that is precisely when it pigments most easily. On areas that were not operated on you can sunbathe from the first week.
The two curves that do not coincide
If this page is good for one thing only, let it be this.
The shape of the breast and the scar do not move at the same speed, and expecting them to is what makes so many people distressed at two months.
| When it improves | |
|---|---|
| The shape | It shows from the start; it settles at around six months, when the swelling goes down. |
| Scarring | It is worse during the first few months —red, raised, sometimes itchy— and it goes on maturing well beyond six months. |
🔑 Translation: at two or three months it is usual to have a breast you are starting to like and scars you are not. That is not a bad result: they are two different clocks. How the scar evolves, month by month, is in breast lift and reduction scars.
Signs to call about
They are not common, but it is worth being clear about them before you need them:
- Fever.
- Pain that increases instead of decreasing, or that stops responding to the painkillers.
- A breast that swells or hardens suddenly and asymmetrically — it may be a haematoma.
- Increasing redness, heat or discharge from the wound.
- A change in the colour of the nipple or the areola.
⚠️ With any of these, call your surgeon. If you had your operation elsewhere, the person who has to see you is the one who operated on you, or the hospital emergency department if it is outside consulting hours.

Frequently asked questions
Does a breast lift hurt?
The dominant sensation patients describe is one of pressure and tightness rather than stabbing pain, and it is controlled with the prescribed painkillers. It is worth knowing that recovery from a breast lift has not been well studied: there are no published pain scales specific to this operation.
How long does recovery take?
The return to everyday activity usually happens at around two weeks, and the result is assessed at around six months. The intermediate timings are set by your surgeon at each check-up.
When can I go back to work and drive?
It depends on the type of work and on how your recovery goes, and it is a protocol your surgeon must give you. As an objective reference from another breast operation, in breast reduction the mean return to the previous level of activity took 33.5 days measured with phone accelerometry.
When can I exercise?
Sport is reintroduced gradually from the first month onwards and with proper support. The calendar by type of exercise is set by your surgeon.
How long do I have to wear the post-surgical bra?
Continuously for the first few weeks, day and night. The total duration is set by your surgeon at the check-ups.
When will I be able to sleep on my side or face down?
For the first few weeks you sleep on your back and propped up. Going back to sleeping on your side is allowed at a check-up, when the tissue permits it.
When is the final result visible?
At around six months, when the tissue has settled and the swelling has gone. The scars go on maturing for a good while afterwards, so at six months you will have the shape almost final but not the final scar.
Why is my breast fine but the scars look bad?
Because they move at different speeds. The shape settles at around six months; the scar is worse during the first few months and improves much later. That is normal, not a bad result.

Book your consultation
If you are having surgery soon, the four questions worth taking to the consultation written down are: when do I go back to work, when do I drive, how long in the bra and when can I go back to the gym. They are answered in a minute, they depend on your case and the internet is not going to settle them.
And if you are already in the middle of recovery looking at your scars at two months: it is too soon to judge them. They run on a different clock.
