Treatment at ICPM: Facelift in Valencia

In short

  • The word “facelift” covers very different operations. A limited approach to the lower third and a full cervicofacial lift do not take the same time in theatre or achieve the same thing, and that is why the range is wide.
  • 🔑 What moves the quotation most is the scope, followed by the anatomical complexity of the case, by whether it is a reoperation and by whether it is combined with other procedures.
  • The quotation includes the operation, the surgical team and the follow-up reviews, and it is fixed after the assessment consultation, not before.
  • ⚠️ “Mini-lift” has no standardised definition. When comparing two offers you have to ask which areas are treated, which plane is addressed and whether the neck is included — the name alone is not enough.
  • If procedures are combined, the whole is quoted for. Combining usually works out better than having two operations, and it also raises the surgical risk.
  • ⚠️ A facelift with a cosmetic purpose is not covered by the public health service or by private health insurance.
  • A price that stands out for being low has an explanation, and it is worth finding out what it is before deciding.

It is one of the most frequent searches about this procedure and one of the worst answered: most pages either give no figure, or give a figure without saying what it covers, which comes to much the same thing.

Here is the range we work with, what it includes, what moves it and — most useful if you are comparing — why two quotations with the same name may not be the same thing.

What moves the range

1. The scope of the operation

This is the main factor. A limited approach to the lower third, a facelift and a full cervicofacial lift are different operations, with different theatre times. The difference also shows in recovery: five to seven days before returning to work against two or three weeks.

Which scope applies to each case is not chosen by the patient: it is determined by where the laxity is. It is explained on the page on facelift, neck lift or mini-lift.

2. The complexity and anatomy of the case

Two people with the same planned scope may require different times and different surgical manoeuvres: skin quality, the state of the neck, the amount of tissue to be repositioned and pre-existing asymmetries all change the operation.

3. Whether it is a reoperation

A second facelift is not a repeat of the first. There are previous scars, planes already dissected and tissue that behaves differently: in a comparison between primary and secondary patients, the SMAS of the latter was considerably thinner and the amount of skin to resect smaller. It is a more delicate operation and it is quoted for as such. It is developed on the page about a second facelift.

4. Whether it is combined with other procedures

Combining is the norm: in a database of 13,346 facelifts, the average was 2.3 procedures per operation, and blepharoplasty was the most frequent addition. When that happens, the whole is quoted for, and it usually works out better than having two separate operations: one anaesthetic, one theatre session, one recovery.

⚠️ And it has a downside that is not financial: in a series of 11,300 patients, the major complication rate went from 1.5% for a facelift alone to up to 3.7% when combined.

The indicative price

At the Instituto de Cirugía Plástica del Mediterráneo, a facelift comes to between €5,000 and €9,000.

The range is wide for the reasons set out above: the same word covers very different operations. The quotation is fixed after the assessment consultation, once it is clear which scope applies and whether procedures are going to be combined.

What the price includes

This is the part almost no quotation itemises and the one that makes two figures incomparable. All of this is included:

The operation Surgical team fees and theatre
The anaesthetic Anaesthetist and medication
The stay One night in hospital
What you take home wearing The support garment and the Epifoam
The follow-up Reviews and follow-up for a year

🔑 That “for a year” is the part worth comparing. Follow-up after a facelift does not end at a fortnight: the scar matures over months and the definitive position of the tissue takes time to show. A quotation that includes two reviews and one that includes a year are not the same figure even though they look like it.

Payment in instalments

There are finance options, with terms of up to five years. The specific conditions are gone through at the consultation, along with the fixed quotation.

If a complication arises or a revision is needed

Each case is assessed individually. If a complication arises from the operation, it is managed at the clinic without charging for the procedure again; minor refining adjustments are usually included, at a minimal cost.

⚠️ This is not a guarantee of result. Medicine is an obligation of means, not of result. It is a commitment to make it as easy as possible to deal with any problem, which is a different thing and the two should not be confused.

How to compare two quotations

This is the practical part, and it is useful even if you do not have surgery with us.

Ask which areas are treated. Is the neck included? The midface? Only the jawline? Two “facelifts” can differ by half a face.

Ask what the amount includes. Surgeon’s fees, theatre, anaesthetist, materials, the first night if there is one, reviews, medication, garments or dressings. A quotation that does not itemise is a quotation to ask about.

Ask what happens if something goes wrong. Who covers the management of a complication, and on what terms a revision is done. There should be a concrete answer.

Ask how many reviews are included and for how long. Follow-up after a facelift does not end at a fortnight.

And check who operates. It is not a question about price, but it conditions everything else: what qualifications they hold and what the regulations require is explained on the page about who is allowed to perform cosmetic surgery in Spain.

🔑 If a quotation is strikingly lower than the rest, there is almost always an identifiable reason: a smaller scope, a clinic without the same facilities, a different team, or items that will be invoiced later. It is worth finding it before signing, not afterwards.

What no insurance covers

A facelift with a cosmetic purpose is not covered by the public health service or by private health insurance, which exclude cosmetic surgery from their cover.

The distinction between a cosmetic purpose and a functional or reconstructive one does exist in other facial operations — an eyelid that restricts the visual field is the classic example, explained on the page about droopy eyelids — but a rejuvenation facelift does not fall into that category.

🔑 If your case has a reconstructive component — sequelae of trauma, of facial palsy or of previous surgery — that is a different situation and it is dealt with here: in cases that call for it we routinely operate to improve the sequelae of facial palsy. It is a different operation from a rejuvenation facelift, with different aims and a different quotation, and it is assessed individually.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a facelift cost in Valencia?

At our clinic, between €5,000 and €9,000, depending on the scope of the operation, the complexity of the case and whether it is combined with other procedures. The quotation is fixed after the assessment consultation.

What does the price include?

The operation and the surgical team, the theatre, the anaesthetic, one night in hospital, the support garment and the Epifoam, and reviews and follow-up for a year.

Can it be paid in instalments?

Yes. There are finance options with terms of up to five years, and the conditions are gone through at the consultation along with the fixed quotation.

Why is the range so wide?

Because the word “facelift” covers very different operations. A limited approach to the lower third and a full cervicofacial lift do not take the same time in theatre or treat the same areas.

What does the price include?

The operation, the surgical team and the follow-up reviews.

Does the price include revisions?

Minor refining adjustments are usually included, at a minimal cost, and the management of a complication arising from the operation is dealt with without charging for the procedure again. It is not a guarantee of result: medicine is an obligation of means.

Is it cheaper to have several things operated on at once?

Usually yes, because the anaesthetic, theatre and recovery are shared, and the whole is quoted for. It also raises the surgical risk: from 1.5% to 3.7% major complications in a series of 11,300 patients.

Is it covered by the Spanish public health service or by my insurance?

No. A facelift with a cosmetic purpose falls outside public cover and outside private health insurance, which exclude cosmetic surgery.

I have seen much lower prices. Why?

There is usually a specific reason: a smaller scope, a clinic with different facilities, a different team or items invoiced separately. It is worth identifying which before deciding.
