In short

  • It does not fill and it does not change structures. It combines low-molecular-weight hyaluronic acid with vitamins, amino acids and antioxidants to improve the quality of the skin without touching the features.
  • It acts in the deep layers, reactivating hydration, collagen and dermal density. It is applied with micro-injections — a very fine needle or a cannula — and finishes with a massage that spreads the product.
  • It is used both to treat and to prevent: mature skin with early laxity, young skin with fine lines and dehydration, and skin damaged after weight loss or heavy sun exposure.
  • The protocol is 3 sessions 15 or 30 days apart, and then 1 or 2 maintenance sessions a year. It starts to show after a week and consolidates after the third session.
  • No time off and no recovery time: mild redness or small bruises that disappear within 48 hours at most. It is not done in pregnancy, while breastfeeding, or with an active skin infection.

At the Instituto de Cirugía Plástica del Mediterráneo (ICPM) in Valencia we are specialists in advanced medical-aesthetic treatments that put safety, a natural look and effectiveness first. One of the procedures most in demand among those who want to improve the quality of their skin without surgery is facial redensification.

This treatment does not only address the visible signs of ageing: it improves the texture, the hydration and the radiance of the face as a whole. In this article you will find everything you need to understand the procedure, to know whether it is right for you, and to see why ICPM is a leading clinic for it.

What is facial redensification?

Facial redensification is a minimally invasive aesthetic medicine treatment that combines low-molecular-weight hyaluronic acid with vitamins, amino acids and antioxidants. Its aim is to improve the overall quality of the skin by reactivating its natural mechanisms of hydration, collagen production and dermal redensification.

Unlike other treatments that set out to fill or modify facial structures, redensification acts in the deep layers of the skin to restore the cellular balance, recover elasticity and bring a healthy radiance without altering the natural features of the face.

What benefits does it offer?

The benefits of this treatment have been widely documented and make it a high-value medical-aesthetic option for anyone who wants to improve their appearance naturally and gradually.

The main benefits are:

  • Deep rehydration: hyaluronic acid holds water in the extracellular matrix, improving the texture, the softness and the appearance of the skin.
  • Collagen stimulation: the active ingredients act in the dermis to stimulate the production of collagen, which is essential for firm, elastic skin.
  • Reduction of fine lines: by nourishing and compacting the skin, it improves the appearance of fine lines and folds.
  • Recovery of lost volume: a natural redensification takes place that softens the loss of structure typical of ageing.
  • Radiance and an even tone: by activating the microcirculation, oxygenation improves and the tone becomes more uniform.
  • Preventing ageing: it does not only treat, it also prevents, particularly in young patients with early signs.

What is the procedure like?

The treatment is carried out in the consulting room, with no need for an operating theatre. It is quick, effective and practically painless. Here is each stage in detail:

  1. Individual assessment: the specialist analyses the current condition of the skin and defines the areas to be treated according to what the patient needs.
  2. Preparing the skin: the facial area is cleansed and a topical anaesthetic is applied to reduce any discomfort during the procedure.
  3. Applying the micro-injections: a very fine needle or a cannula is used to deliver the product into the deep layers of the dermis. The number of injection points varies according to the initial assessment.
  4. Final massage: a gentle massage is given to distribute the product evenly and help it integrate into the tissue.

The procedure takes about 30 minutes. There is no need to interrupt your daily routine, and patients can return to their usual activities immediately afterwards.

Who is it indicated for?

Facial redensification is indicated for a wide range of patients. It is not only a corrective treatment but a preventive one. It is ideal for:

  • Mature skin: with loss of firmness, dehydration, early laxity and visible signs of ageing.
  • Young skin: beginning to show fine lines, dehydration or loss of radiance, where the aim is to prevent larger structural changes.
  • Patients after weight loss or heavy sun exposure: where damaged or disorganised tissue needs regenerating.

It is not recommended in pregnant women, in women who are breastfeeding, or in patients with active infectious processes in the skin.

What results can you expect?

The results are gradual but progressive. They begin to show from the first week and consolidate after the third session. As the skin recovers collagen and its capacity to hold water, the appearance becomes healthier and more rejuvenated.

The results you can expect are:

  • visibly denser skin, with less laxity
  • fewer fine lines and better skin tone
  • greater elasticity and resistance to oxidative stress
  • a face that looks rested, without stiffness or abrupt changes

A key advantage is that the expression of the face is not altered. The rejuvenation is subtle, gradual and natural.

How many sessions are needed?

The standard protocol is 3 initial sessions, 15 or 30 days apart depending on the condition of the skin. After that, 1 to 2 maintenance sessions a year are recommended.

This treatment can be combined with other medical-aesthetic procedures such as laser, chemical peel, neuromodulators or radiofrequency to enhance the results without risk.

What has actually been measured

This kind of treatment — non-cross-linked hyaluronic acid with vitamins and antioxidants, in micro-injections — carries the reasonable suspicion of being more promise than evidence. So it is worth going to the data.

The strongest study is a randomised, controlled, multicentre trial with 146 participants, allocated 3 to 1 between treatment and control. At 75 and at 120 days there was a significant reduction in superficial wrinkles in the three areas studied — around the eyes, the neck and the décolletage — and a significant improvement in skin hydration measured a week after the last session. Self-esteem as reported by the participants also improved to a statistically significant degree. The adverse effects were mild and resolved within 48 hours.

It is worth reading carefully what it is that improves, because it sets the expectation: superficial wrinkles, hydration and skin quality. Not volume, not structural firmness, not the jawline. This does not fill and it does not tighten: it hydrates deeply and improves texture, which is a modest and perfectly legitimate aim — and the only one the evidence supports.

Hence the schedule, too: the effects were measured after a course of sessions and from the second month onwards. It is a treatment of consistency, not a single session, and its results are seen in how the skin looks close up, not in the mirror from two metres away.

What is recovery like?

One of the things our patients value most is that facial redensification requires no time off and no recovery time.

After the session there may be mild redness, minimal swelling or small bruises at the injection points. These resolve within a few hours, or 48 hours at most.

We recommend:

  • avoiding direct sun exposure for the first 24 hours
  • not applying make-up for the first 6–8 hours
  • keeping the skin properly hydrated and using sun protection

Frequently asked questions

What exactly is facial redensification?

It is about treating the quality of the skin, not its volume. Instead of filling a fold or projecting a cheekbone, products intended to improve deep hydration, elasticity and texture are infiltrated in micro-doses, spread across the area.

It is usually proposed for the cheeks, the neck, the décolletage and the backs of the hands, which are areas where the problem is not missing volume but skin that has lost density and light.

Understanding the difference matters because it changes the expectation: the next day you are not going to look filled, you are going to see — over time — skin that looks better.

How is it different from a hyaluronic acid filler?

The starting material is often the same, and they are still different treatments, because what changes is how it is formulated, where it goes and what it is for:

Filler Redensification
What it is for Adding volume or projection at a specific point Improving the quality of the skin across an area
Where it is placed Deep, at specific points In superficial micro-deposits spread across the area
When it shows Immediately Gradually, over weeks
What it corrects A fold, a contour, a loss of volume Dryness, dullness, texture, elasticity

Confusing them leads to asking for the wrong thing: someone with a marked fold is not going to resolve it with deep hydration, and someone with dull skin is not going to resolve it with volume.

Does it hurt? Will I be left with marks?

They are superficial pinpricks with a very fine needle and they are well tolerated; an anaesthetic cream can be used. What is common is to leave with small bumps or weals at the injection points, which are the product itself deposited under the skin, and with the odd small bruise.

The bumps are reabsorbed within hours or a couple of days, depending on the product and the area. It is worth knowing beforehand so as not to be alarmed, and it is worth not having it done the day before an engagement.

When does it show and how long does it last?

It is not immediate. The effect builds over weeks, which is why it is usually planned as several separate sessions: judging it after three days is judging it before anything has happened.

Nor is it permanent. It is a maintenance treatment, and how long it holds depends on the area, the product, your skin and — a great deal — on what you do about the sun and about smoking.

An honest warning about the figures that circulate: the evidence for this family of treatments is scarcer and more heterogeneous than that for toxin or for volume fillers, and a good part of the studies are small or have been carried out by the manufacturers. The timeframes published are best taken as guidance, not as a guarantee.

Can it be combined with other treatments?

Yes, and in fact it usually is, because each problem in a face needs its own tool: the movement that marks a line, the volume that is missing and the quality of the skin are not treated with the same thing. What is done in the same session and what is better spaced out depends on the techniques and on their recovery.

What should not happen is starting with the treatment and deciding afterwards which problem it solves. This site explains what each family treats under botulinum toxin or hyaluronic acid, and the two neighbours of this one — collagen inducers and polynucleotides — have their own page.

When is it not advisable?

With an active infection or flare-up in the area to be treated, with irritated or broken skin, in pregnancy and breastfeeding, and if there is a history of reaction to a previous injectable product. The approach also changes if you are on anticoagulants or antiplatelet drugs, because of the risk of bruising.

And one that gets forgotten: if you have had product injected before and you do not know which, say so. Knowing what you already have in place determines what can be done on top of it.
