In short

  • Two technologies in the same handpiece: microneedles that enter to different depths and fractional radiofrequency that heats the deep dermis without damaging the surface of the skin.
  • Controlled heat contracts the collagen already there and stimulates new fibres. There is an immediate tightening effect, but collagen production carries on working for 4 to 6 months afterwards.
  • It is used on the face and the body: laxity of the face, neck and décolletage, fine lines, acne marks, stretch marks and localised fat on the abdomen, arms, thighs or buttocks.
  • The usual course is 3 sessions 4–6 weeks apart, of about 30 minutes and with anaesthetic cream; with mild laxity, or as maintenance, one session a year may be enough. Afterwards, 24–48 hours of redness and strict sun protection.
  • It is not carried out in pregnancy or breastfeeding, with active autoimmune disease, with wounds or infections in the area, or in people with a pacemaker or other implanted electronic device.

At the Instituto de Cirugía Plástica del Mediterráneo (ICPM) we are experts in advanced aesthetic medicine techniques for improving the quality of the skin without resorting to invasive procedures. One of the most transformative treatments we offer at our clinic in Valencia is Morpheus8, an effective answer to laxity, wrinkles and imperfections of the skin using fractional radiofrequency and microneedles. This procedure combines science, technology and medical precision to deliver results visible from the first session.

Below we explain in detail what Morpheus8 is, how it acts on the skin and what benefits it brings, both to the face and to the body.

What Morpheus8 is and how it works

Morpheus8 is a minimally invasive aesthetic medicine treatment that combines two technologies: fractional, intradermal radiofrequency and a microneedling system. This synergy makes it possible to reach the deep dermis and the subdermal fat without damaging the surface of the skin, directly stimulating the production of collagen and elastin. The result is firmer, smoother skin with a marked improvement in its texture and quality.

Fractional radiofrequency emits controlled thermal energy that acts on the subcutaneous tissue. This energy heats the existing collagen and encourages the creation of new fibres, producing a tightening effect that is both immediate and progressive. The microneedles penetrate precisely to different depths according to the area treated, generating an additional mechanical stimulus that activates the processes of skin regeneration.

How far each technology reaches: Morpheus8 and FaceTiteA cross-sectional diagram of the skin, with four layers drawn to the same scale: epidermis, dermis, subcutaneous fat and muscle. In the left half, a Morpheus8 handpiece resting on the skin introduces several microneedles that pass through the epidermis and release heat at different depths, from the dermis to the subdermal fat, with a zone of heat around each tip. In the right half, the FaceTite cannula enters through a micro-incision, crosses the skin and travels horizontally through the subcutaneous fat, with zones of heat around it and two converging arrows in the dermis indicating the retraction of the skin.
The two technologies work at different depths, and that is why they do different things. Morpheus8 passes through the epidermis with microneedles and releases the radiofrequency at an adjustable depth, from the dermis to the subdermal fat: it heats the existing collagen and stimulates new fibres without damaging the surface of the skin. FaceTite enters through a micro-incision and travels through the subcutaneous fat, where the heat melts localised fat and retracts the tissue from below. The difference is not only the depth: the microneedles deposit the heat at points, and the cannula spreads it along a path. Hence one is aimed mainly at the quality and firmness of the skin, and the other at fat volume and contour. Indications for Morpheus8

Morpheus8 is indicated for people who want to rejuvenate the skin, improve its firmness or treat various imperfections without surgery. It can be applied to the face and to different areas of the body, offering effective, safe results in:

  • Laxity of the face, the neck and the décolletage
  • Reduction of fine lines and expression lines
  • Acne marks and superficial scars
  • Stretch marks and changes in skin texture
  • Localised fat in areas such as the abdomen, arms, thighs and buttocks
  • Rejuvenation of mature or sun-damaged skin

This treatment is suitable for all skin types and can be carried out at any time of year, provided the medical advice on sun protection is followed.

Areas of application, on the face and the body

Morpheus8 is highly versatile and adaptable, which allows both delicate areas and more resistant body areas to be treated safely:

On the face and neck:

  • Cheeks
  • Jawline
  • Nasolabial contour
  • Chin
  • Neck
  • Eye area (mild laxity and fine lines)

On the body:

  • Arms (inner surface)
  • Abdomen (after pregnancy or weight loss)
  • Flanks
  • Buttocks
  • Thighs (inner and outer)
  • The area around the navel
  • Stretch marks on the breasts, hips and legs

The visible benefits of the treatment

Morpheus8 offers subtle visible results from the first session, with gradual improvements in the following weeks. The process of neocollagenesis (the formation of new collagen) continues for 4 to 6 months after the treatment.

Main benefits:

  • Improved firmness and elasticity of the skin
  • Reduction of fine lines and facial folds
  • Reduction of body laxity
  • Improved skin texture and radiance
  • Reduction of acne scars and traumatic marks
  • Softening of both recent and old stretch marks
  • A more defined body contour in areas with localised fat

The combination of these effects produces an overall, harmonious improvement in the appearance of the skin, with a natural finish and without altering the features.

What a Morpheus8 session is like

Before starting the treatment, an individual assessment is carried out to define the areas to be treated, the depth of action and the number of sessions needed. At ICPM we make sure the procedure is adapted to each patient according to their skin type, their needs and their goals.

The procedure usually takes about 30 minutes. Beforehand, an anaesthetic cream is applied to keep discomfort to a minimum. During the session, the Morpheus8 device is glided over the chosen area, applying the radiofrequency energy and the microneedles evenly.

After the session it is normal to have mild redness or swelling for the first 24 to 48 hours. In some cases small superficial crusts may appear, which disappear within a few days. We recommend avoiding direct sun exposure and using broad-spectrum sun protection in the days that follow.

How many sessions are needed

The number of sessions depends on the initial condition of the skin and on the goal of the treatment. In most cases 3 sessions are recommended, 4 to 6 weeks apart. In patients with mild laxity, or for preventive treatments, a single session a year may be enough.

To improve texture, soften scars or treat body areas with localised fat, courses of several sessions may be indicated. The results are cumulative and are at their best when combined with healthy habits, good hydration and medical follow-up.

Clinical results and scientific evidence

Morpheus8 has been approved by regulatory bodies and is supported by clinical studies demonstrating its efficacy in remodelling the skin and the tissue beneath it. Unlike other superficial radiofrequency treatments, Morpheus8 acts in the deeper layers of the dermis, which gives longer-lasting, more visible results.

The device allows work at different depths with millimetre precision, which makes it a safe tool even in sensitive areas. Its advanced technology also guarantees even thermal control, avoiding damage to the surface of the skin.

The figures behind it

Radiofrequency microneedling is one of the aesthetic technologies that has accumulated literature fastest, and it is worth looking at what that literature says when it is all added up.

A recent systematic review brought together 22 studies, with data synthesised from 558 patients. Three conclusions, in order of solidity:

  • Consistent improvement in the texture and the firmness of the skin.
  • Satisfaction above 90% in most of the studies, a high figure even for this field.
  • A favourable safety profile: the adverse effects were mild and passing — redness and swelling — and no serious complication was recorded.

And for the most demanding indication, acne scarring, there is a separate review: 16 studies and 481 patients conclude that fractional radiofrequency microneedling is probably effective even used on its own, without combining it with anything. The authors call for more trials to refine the parameters, and that nuance deserves telling as it is: it works, but there is not yet consensus on the optimal depth and energy settings.

Hence the number of sessions and the needle depth are not dictated by the device but by the thickness of the skin and by what is being treated. It is a treatment with good evidence and room for adjustment, which is a fairly comfortable combination.

Medical indications and contraindications

The treatment is suitable for men and women from the age of 30 who want to improve the quality of their skin or reverse the signs of ageing without surgery. It is particularly indicated in patients with mild or moderate laxity, devitalised skin or the after-effects of acne.

It is not recommended in the following cases:

  • Pregnancy or breastfeeding
  • Active autoimmune diseases
  • Open wounds or skin infections in the area to be treated
  • Patients with a pacemaker or other implanted electronic devices

At ICPM we assess each case individually to make sure the procedure is appropriate and to avoid possible risks.

Frequently asked questions

Does it hurt? What anaesthetic is used?

It is a treatment you feel. It combines microneedles that pass through the skin with radiofrequency, so there is a prick and there is heat. It is done with anaesthetic cream applied far enough in advance, and with that most people tolerate it well; the sensation most described is not a stabbing pain but intense heat on particular passes.

Asking how long the cream is left to work before starting is reasonable: it is what most changes the experience.

How long will it show on my face?

When you leave, the skin is red and marked by the handpiece, like a grid of fine dots, and somewhat swollen. Usually the redness and swelling settle within a few days, and the pinpoint marks go sooner.

It is a treatment with short social downtime, not none: if you have an engagement, it is worth leaving some margin and not having it the day before. The specific routine for those days — what can be applied, when you can wear make-up again, how long strict sun protection is needed — is given to you in writing.

Is it suitable for dark skin?

That is one of its advantages over other techniques. Radiofrequency microneedling delivers the energy below the surface, through the needles, rather than heating the pigmented layer of the skin. That reduces the risk of the treatment leaving a mark, which is the classic problem with ablative techniques in skin with more pigment.

Reducing the risk is not eliminating it: in higher phototypes the parameters still have to be adjusted and the skin prepared, and the sun afterwards still rules. But it is a technique that, properly indicated, opens the door to skin that would have to think much harder about an ablative laser.

How is it different from the CO₂ laser?

They work in different ways and do not compete as much as it seems:

  • Radiofrequency microneedling creates mechanical micro-injuries and adds heat at depth through the needles. It acts from below without destroying the surface.
  • The fractional CO₂ laser creates columns of controlled thermal damage from the surface, and that is why it particularly improves the texture of the outermost layer.

A 2026 review comparing the two techniques in acne scarring concludes that both are effective and that the result depends on the patient and on the parameters used, more than on choosing a technology. The same review notes that combined use is under study.

In other words: the right question is not «which is better?» but «what is happening to my skin and which layer needs treating?».

Does it replace a facelift?

No. It is the expectation that causes the most disappointment in this whole field, so it is worth saying plainly: it does not remove skin. What it can do is improve the quality and the firmness of the skin that is there.

When what there is too much of is skin — a dropped neck, a lost jawline — no number of sessions is going to resolve it, and anyone promising otherwise is selling something else. Knowing which side of that boundary you are on is exactly what an assessment decides.

When is it not indicated?

With an active infection or flare-up in the area, with irritated or broken skin, in pregnancy, and in people with a pacemaker or other implanted electronic device, since this is a radiofrequency treatment. It also has to be weighed carefully if there is a history of keloids, if you are taking certain medicines or if you have had a lot of sun recently.

It is not a list to decide on by yourself: that is why there is a medical consultation beforehand, with a clinical history.
