It is your own blood, concentrated. It is drawn as for a blood test, spun in a centrifuge to isolate the platelets — loaded with growth factors — and infiltrated with superficial micro-injections.
No external chemical substance is involved, which rules out allergic reactions. The whole session takes 30 to 45 minutes, in the consulting room and without anaesthesia, with an anaesthetic cream if needed.
It is used on the face, neck, décolletage, hands, acne scars and scalp, the last of these in non-scarring alopecia and in its early stages.
The schedules differ according to the goal: for facial rejuvenation, 3 sessions a year 30–45 days apart; for the scalp, one session a month for six months and then maintenance every six or twelve months.
It is not indicated with clotting disorders, active infection or autoimmune disease, in pregnancy and breastfeeding, or with active cancer or immunosuppressive treatment.
At the Instituto de Cirugía Plástica del Mediterráneo, in Valencia, we are specialists in advanced aesthetic solutions on a medical footing. Among our most requested treatments is platelet-rich plasma (PRP), a regenerative biological technique that harnesses the body’s own healing power to improve the quality of the skin, slow hair loss and stimulate cell repair.
This procedure has shown growing efficacy both in aesthetic dermatology and in regenerative medicine. Below we explain everything you need to know if you are considering platelet-rich plasma treatment in Valencia, from how it works and its benefits to the clinical indications, contraindications and the results you can expect.
Would you like to book a consultation to have your case assessed?
PRP is an autologous concentrate obtained from the patient’s own blood. After it is drawn, the blood is spun in a centrifuge to isolate the platelets, which contain growth factors essential to tissue regeneration.
These growth factors are what stimulate the production of collagen, elastin and new tissue in the treated area. The procedure involves no external chemical substance, which is why it is considered 100% biocompatible and safe.
The name of the treatment describes literally what is injected. Blood is drawn from the patient, as for a blood test; it is spun in a centrifuge, and as the components separate a concentrated band of platelets is left, which are the carriers of the growth factors; and it is that fraction that is infiltrated with superficial micro-injections into the area to be treated. Because no external chemical substance is involved, there is no risk of an allergic reaction to the product, and the whole process is completed in the same session, in 30 to 45 minutes. In the aesthetic field, PRP is generally applied to the face, the neck, the décolletage, the hands and the scalp. The goals vary from case to case: rejuvenating the skin, improving its texture, softening fine lines, treating acne scars, tackling laxity or stimulating hair growth in the early stages of alopecia.
Why choose PRP as an aesthetic treatment?
Platelet-rich plasma has established itself as an effective, minimally invasive alternative to other anti-ageing or hair treatments. These are some of the reasons why more and more patients in Valencia choose PRP:
It is a natural treatment: because it is based on components of your own blood, it avoids allergic reactions and keeps the risks to a minimum.
It stimulates deep regeneration: the growth factors act at cell level, improving the structure and the density of the skin.
It is compatible with other treatments: it can be combined with microneedling, laser, hyaluronic acid or mesotherapy, enhancing the results.
It adapts to a range of needs: from facial rejuvenation to treating hair loss or improving scars.
It has cumulative effects: with regular sessions the improvement can be maintained and built on.
Which areas can be treated with PRP?
At the clinic we treat different areas of the body according to what the patient needs. The most common are:
Face: it improves the radiance, firmness and elasticity of the skin.
Neck and décolletage: sensitive areas where the aim is to prevent premature ageing.
Hands: it brings hydration and improves the quality of the skin.
Scalp: particularly indicated in the early stages of alopecia or hair weakening.
Scars or acne marks: it stimulates the regeneration of damaged skin.
How is the procedure carried out?
The whole treatment takes roughly 30 to 45 minutes. It is carried out in the consulting room, with no need for a hospital stay or anaesthesia. The process has three stages:
Drawing the blood: a venepuncture is carried out, much like a blood test.
Centrifuging: a medical centrifuge separates the platelets from the other components.
Applying the PRP: the plasma is infiltrated into the areas to be treated with superficial micro-injections.
In some cases an anaesthetic cream can be applied to reduce the discomfort during the procedure. The patient can return to normal life the same day, although we recommend avoiding direct sun and cosmetics for the first 24 hours.
How many sessions are needed?
The number of sessions varies according to the goals of the treatment and the initial condition of the skin or the scalp. In general:
For facial rejuvenation, 3 sessions a year are recommended, about 30 to 45 days apart.
For hair treatment, the usual protocol is one session a month for six months, followed by maintenance sessions every six or twelve months.
The results are gradual and become visible from the first or second session, increasing over time thanks to the continued cell stimulation.
Visible, real results
The effects of PRP are cumulative and progressive. On the face, patients report:
Better skin tone and texture
Reduction of enlarged pores
Greater firmness and elasticity
Fewer fine expression lines
Skin that looks brighter and more rested
In hair treatments, the most common results are:
Less hair loss
Stronger, thicker hair
Greater density in thinning areas
Results vary from one patient to another, since they depend on factors such as age, hormonal status, lifestyle and how affected the area was to begin with.
Where the evidence is stronger and where it is weaker
PRP is a treatment about which much has been written and less has been measured, so it is worth saying precisely where the evidence is solid — and it is, quite solid — and where it is not yet.
It works best in company and with something to repair. A meta-analysis brought together 14 controlled studies and 472 patients with acne scarring. Adding PRP to microneedling, compared with microneedling alone, almost tripled the odds of an improvement greater than 50% and quadrupled patient satisfaction, without increasing serious adverse effects. It is a real, quantified benefit with a simple explanation: microneedling opens the repair pathway and the plasma provides the stimulus.
Where the evidence is weakest is as a stand-alone injection to «tighten». A randomised study compared PRP against saline on each participant’s own face and found no appreciable differences in roughness, firmness or wrinkles. It is a small series, of 18 people, and it does not settle the matter, but it marks where the reasonable expectation should sit.
The practical reading, and the one we apply: PRP performs within a protocol and against a specific target — a scar, damaged texture — not as a stand-alone injection from which to expect a lifting effect. For that there are other tools, and it is better said beforehand than afterwards.
Indications and contraindications
Platelet-rich plasma treatment is indicated for men and women from the age of 25 or 30 who want to improve the appearance and health of their skin, or to prevent the signs of ageing. It is also indicated in patients with non-scarring hair loss, in its early stages.
It is not recommended in the following cases, however:
Patients with clotting disorders
People with active infections or autoimmune diseases
Pregnancy or breastfeeding
Active cancer or immunosuppressive treatment

PRP uses your own blood: it is drawn, spun to concentrate the platelets, and that concentrate is infiltrated. The idea is to make use of the growth factors in the platelets to stimulate tissue repair.
What is worth being clear about from the start is that it does not fill. It does not add volume, it does not correct a marked fold, and it does not replace a filler or surgery. What it can improve is the quality of the skin: texture, radiance, surface firmness.
And the evidence has to be read as it is. A 2026 systematic review of PRP and PRF in the area around the eyes, covering 26 studies, found high patient satisfaction, only moderate efficacy on periocular pigmentation and uneven results on the objective measures of wrinkles and texture. The authors themselves point out that the enormous variability in preparation methods limits the conclusions.
Does it hurt? What is the session like?
It has two parts. The first is an ordinary blood draw, like a blood test. The second is the infiltration, done with fine needles or with microneedles, and it is well tolerated; an anaesthetic cream can be used.
It is normal to leave with the face somewhat red and swollen, and with the possibility of a small bruise at the entry points. It usually settles within a day or two.
When does it show, and how long does it last?
It is not a treatment with an immediate effect, and that is the main difference from a filler: what is stimulated is the repair of the tissue itself, and that takes weeks. That is why it is planned as several sessions, and why judging it after the first makes no sense.
How long it lasts depends on your skin, your age, the sun and smoking. It is not a permanent result: it is planned as maintenance.
Is it safe? It is my own blood, isn’t it?
The fact that the product is yours removes the risk of rejection and of an allergic reaction to the material, which is a real advantage over an external product. It does not make it a treatment without risks: it is still an infiltration, with its risk of infection, bruising and swelling, and like any procedure involving drawing and handling blood it demands aseptic conditions and a controlled circuit.
Asking how it is prepared and with what equipment is reasonable at any clinic. The variability of the preparation systems is, according to the literature itself, the weak point of this treatment.
Does it work for hair?
Hair loss is one of the most described uses of PRP in the literature, with results pointing to an improvement in density in certain types of alopecia. It is a different field from the face, with its own protocols and its own studies.
If that is what you are after, it is worth consulting about it as such: diagnosing the type of alopecia comes first, because they do not all respond the same way and some need something else beforehand.
Who should not have it?
PRP starts from your blood, so whatever affects your blood affects it. There are situations in which it is not considered, or has to be weighed carefully: clotting or platelet disorders, anticoagulant or antiplatelet treatment, active infection in the area to be treated, blood disorders, active cancer and pregnancy.
It is not a list to assess yourself against: it is the reason there is a prior medical consultation with a clinical history, and why a blood test is sometimes requested beforehand.
