What it involves
The CO2 laser is the gold standard in skin resurfacing: it vaporises microscopic columns of skin, and the surrounding tissue repairs them by making new collagen. The classic problem with CO2 is not the ablation but the residual heat left around each column, which is responsible for the redness and the two weeks of downtime.
CoolPeel is a mode that uses extremely short, high-power pulses: the tissue is vaporised so quickly that the heat has no time to spread sideways. The result is a clean superficial ablation, with minimal residual thermal damage.
That changes the equation completely: texture, pores and fine lines are treated with redness that lasts days, not weeks. In exchange, it is more superficial than a classic CO2, so it is planned as a course.
Who it is for
Uneven texture, visible pores, fine lines and dull skin, in people who cannot afford two weeks of downtime. In higher phototypes it has to be assessed more carefully because of the risk of pigmentation.
What a session is like
Topical anaesthetic is applied about half an hour beforehand. The session itself lasts about 20-30 minutes, and you feel heat and a tolerable prickling. Afterwards the skin is red and hot, like sunburn.
What to expect
For the next three or four days there is redness and fine peeling; from then on the skin looks smoother and brighter. The effect on collagen builds up over the following months, which is why a course of three gives considerably more than a single session.
What it does NOT do
It is not a facelift: it does not lift or correct laxity. Nor does it erase deep acne scars in one course, although it improves them.
When it cannot be done. It is not done on tanned skin, with active infection (a cold sore outbreak included), if you are taking isotretinoin or have finished it recently, during pregnancy, or if you have a history of keloids. The prior assessment is there to check all of this.
