Description
3 sessions of intense pulsed light (IPL). Filtered broad-spectrum light, aimed at diffuse redness and sun spots.
What it involves
Pulsed light is not a laser. A laser emits a single wavelength; IPL emits a broad spectrum of light that is trimmed with filters to keep the band that is useful in each case. It is more versatile and less selective.
The principle is selective photothermolysis: a wavelength is chosen that is preferentially absorbed by the target pigment—haemoglobin in a capillary, melanin in a lentigo—to heat and destroy it without damaging what surrounds it.
That is why it works well for two specific indications: diffuse redness with fine capillaries, and sun spots on fair skin. Outside those, it performs much less well.
Who it is for
Diffuse facial redness, fine telangiectasias and solar lentigines on fair skin. The prior assessment is mandatory: IPL is not indicated in higher phototypes or on tanned skin.
What a session is like
The eyes are protected with opaque goggles and a cold gel is applied. Each flash feels like a warm rubber band snapping against the skin: uncomfortable but brief. The session lasts between 15 and 30 minutes.
What to expect
The spots darken over the first few days and then flake off: that is the sign it has worked. Redness improves gradually. The three sessions are spaced about three or four weeks apart.
What it does NOT do
It is not a treatment for melasma—it can even make it worse—nor does it remove hair permanently or correct wrinkles. And it is not done on tanned skin: the risk of burns and pigmentation is real.
When it cannot be done. It is not done on tanned or recently sun-exposed skin, in higher phototypes, after recent isotretinoin, with photosensitising medication, during pregnancy, or on undiagnosed pigmented lesions. Any mole or mark that changes must be examined first, not treated.
