What it involves
Manual lymphatic drainage is a very gentle massage technique with a specific sequence, developed by Vodder and later systematised by Leduc. It is not a relaxing or deep-tissue massage: the pressure is minimal—grams, not kilos—because the lymphatic capillaries are superficial and firm pressure collapses them instead of emptying them.
The lymphatic system has no pump of its own like the heart: it depends on movement, muscle contraction and external pressure. When it is overloaded—after surgery, with recent liposuction, with venous insufficiency—fluid accumulates in the interstitial space and oedema appears.
The strongest evidence is exactly there: in lymphoedema and postoperative oedema, where drainage is part of recognised treatment. In purely aesthetic use, what is achieved is an improvement in oedema and in the feeling of heaviness, which is real but is not the same as losing fat volume.
Who it is for
Fluid retention, heavy legs, oedema after body surgery or liposuction. It is one of the first things we recommend after surgery, as soon as the area allows it.
What a session is like
A manual session, lying down, with slow, rhythmic movements following the path of the lymphatic vessels. The pressure is very light: if it hurts, it is not drainage. It is usually relaxing and leaves a feeling of lightness at the end.
What to expect
The feeling of lightness and the reduction in oedema are usually noticeable from the first few sessions. The result is maintained with consistency, especially after surgery.
What it does NOT do
It does not slim you. What goes is retained fluid, not fat: if the scales go down, they go back up. It does not replace the medical treatment of established lymphoedema, although it is part of it.
When it cannot be done. It is not done if there is acute venous thrombosis, active infection in the area, decompensated heart failure or an uncontrolled tumour. We check all of this at the prior assessment.
