What it involves
Manual lymphatic drainage is a very gentle massage technique with a specific sequence, developed by Vodder and later systematised by Leduc. It is not a relaxing or deep-tissue massage: the pressure is minimal—grams, not kilos—because the lymphatic capillaries are superficial and firm pressure collapses them instead of emptying them.
The lymphatic system has no pump of its own like the heart: it depends on movement, muscle contraction and external pressure. When it is overloaded—after surgery, with recent liposuction, with venous insufficiency—fluid accumulates in the interstitial space and oedema appears.
The strongest evidence is exactly there: in lymphoedema and postoperative oedema, where drainage is part of recognised treatment. In purely aesthetic use, what is achieved is an improvement in oedema and in the feeling of heaviness, which is real but is not the same as losing fat volume.
Who it is for
A puffy face, a tired look, and above all the recovery after facial surgery: facelift, rhinoplasty, blepharoplasty. In those cases drainage shortens the inflammatory phase.
What a session is like
A manual session, lying down, with very gentle movements over the face, the neck and the lymph node chains of the neck. It is painless and quite relaxing.
What to expect
On the face the effect shows quickly: less puffiness and more defined features by the end of the session. After surgery, the aim is to cut weeks off the swelling, and there consistency is what counts.
What it does NOT do
It is not an anti-ageing treatment and it does not tighten the skin. It improves oedema and appearance, not laxity.
When it cannot be done. It is not done if there is active infection in the area, an uncontrolled tumour or an uncontrolled thyroid disorder, because of the work on the neck. We check all of this at the prior assessment.
