What it involves
ZO Skin Health’s 3 Step Peel combines two mechanisms in a single protocol. First a blend of acids—salicylic, lactic and citric—that carries out the chemical exfoliation and prepares the surface. Then retinol at a professional concentration, which does the deeper work on cell renewal and pigment.
The third step is the one that gives it its name and the one most often neglected: a cream you take home and apply over the following days. Without that step the protocol is only half done.
The combination of exfoliation plus a retinoid underpins the melasma and photoageing protocols that work best, because it attacks pigment by two routes at once: speeding up its removal and slowing its production.
Who it is for
Pigmentation, melasma, uneven texture, photoageing and acne-prone skin. The prior assessment is mandatory: we need to see your phototype and your history of pigmentation first.
What a session is like
The first two steps are applied in the clinic, about 30-40 minutes in all. You feel stinging and warmth. When you leave, the skin feels tight and looks tanned. You take home the third-step cream with instructions on days and amounts.
What to expect
Peeling starts around the third day and lasts about three or four more; you need to allow for that week. Afterwards the skin looks visibly more even. The sessions are spaced about four to six weeks apart.
What it does NOT do
It does not correct deep wrinkles, deep scars or laxity. And it is not a one-off treatment for melasma: melasma is controlled, not cured, and without daily sun protection it comes back.
When it cannot be done. It is not done during pregnancy or breastfeeding (it contains retinol), on skin with dermatitis, a wound or active infection, after recent isotretinoin, or on tanned skin. Sunscreen afterwards is non-negotiable.
