What it involves
Glycolic acid is the alpha hydroxy acid with the smallest molecule, which is why it penetrates best. It works by breaking the bonds between the corneocytes of the stratum corneum, which then shed in an orderly way; underneath is a smoother surface that reflects light better.
At in-clinic concentration the effect goes somewhat beyond the cosmetic: there is literature on increased epidermal thickness and improved dermal collagen quality with repeated series.
It is a superficial peel, so it works on the epidermis. That limits what it can do, but also what can go wrong, and explains why it has hardly any downtime.
Who it is for
Uneven texture, dull skin, visible pores and superficial pigmentation. It is a good first peel and works well as a maintenance course. The prior assessment is mandatory.
What a session is like
The skin is cleansed and degreased, the acid is applied and left to work for a few minutes while the reaction is monitored; then it is neutralised. You feel stinging and warmth while it works, which subsides once it is neutralised. The whole session takes less than half an hour.
What to expect
The skin stays slightly pink for a few hours and may peel lightly for two or three days. The radiance shows straight away; the work on texture and pigmentation builds up over the course, with the sessions spaced two to four weeks apart.
What it does NOT do
It is superficial: it does not treat deep wrinkles, deep scars or laxity. And with melasma you have to be careful, because a poorly indicated peel can reactivate it.
When it cannot be done. It is not done on skin with a wound, dermatitis or active infection (cold sores included), during pregnancy, after recent isotretinoin, or on tanned skin. Sunscreen afterwards is mandatory.
