Description
1% encapsulated night-time retinol from ZO Skin Health. High strength: 1% encapsulated retinol, for skin already trained on retinoids.
What it does
Retinol is the cosmetic active with the most evidence on wrinkles, texture and pigmentation. In the skin it is converted into retinoic acid—the active form—and from there it regulates keratinocyte differentiation and stimulates collagen. The trade-off is the irritation of the first few weeks, which is real and to be expected.
Encapsulation is what makes 1% workable: the retinol is released gradually rather than all at once, which reduces the irritation peak without giving up the dose. Even so, this is not a starter product.
It contains vitamins C, E and A as antioxidants, and a blend of Sichuan pepper, sunflower oil and rosemary aimed at reducing the redness that the retinol itself causes.
Who it is for
Skin already used to retinol that is looking to step up. If you have never used one, start with a low concentration: in the EU the limit for retinol in facial cosmetics is 0.3%, and this product is sold in the formulation that applies to each market.

How to use it
At night, on clean, dry skin. Start twice a week, move to alternate days and go up to daily use only if your skin tolerates it. During the day, sunscreen without exception.
Contains vitamin A (a retinoid). It is applied at night, and sun protection is essential during the day. Start twice a week and build up as your skin tolerates it. Not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding: ask your doctor.
Retinol and exfoliating acids, never on the same night: alternate the nights—together they do not add up, they irritate. And on an open or scabbed wound, no retinol until the skin has closed: on an open wound it delays re-epithelialisation (Hung et al., 1989).
