0.5% retinol with depigmenting action from ZO Skin Health. The middle step: the same system as the 0.25%, with twice the retinol.
What it does
It is the same formula as the 0.25% version with the retinol concentration doubled. The progression of this line—0.25%, 0.5%, 1%—is designed so you can step up without changing product or starting tolerance from scratch.
Retinol speeds up keratinocyte turnover, which brings pigment that has already formed to the surface and removes it, and in the medium term it stimulates collagen. The oleosomes release it gradually, which is what allows the dose to go up without irritation shooting up with it.
Bakuchiol and ascorbyl glucoside come along too: the first as a conditioning and soothing agent, the second adding the vitamin C route to skin tone.
Who it is for
Skin that has already been on 0.25% for a few weeks without problems. It is not the place to start.

How to use it
At night, on clean, dry skin. Start twice a week and build up as tolerated. Sunscreen during the day.

Retinol and exfoliating acids, never on the same night: alternate the nights—together they do not add up, they irritate. And on an open or scabbed wound, no retinol until the skin has closed: on an open wound it delays re-epithelialisation (Hung et al., 1989).
